This is why I love running - not for the running itself, but for all of the other little lessons that the process of running forces me to learn. I've learned I'm tougher when I persist at something I'm not inherently good at.
The ability to compartmentalize issues and the ability to break a large task into small pieces (aka solve each piece and you solve the task) are absolute skills sets for success, in my opinion.
Awesome post. Part of the selection process is to weed out those that "really want to be there" ..that is your *intrinsic* motivation ..not for the looks, the praise of others. Having a well define vision before any challenge will be half the battle

Yep! Exactly. That's spot on.
Its always the person's internal engine. Always.
It is far easier to break the body than the mind.
Fantastic post! Steve, I always come away from your posts feeling better and wiser for having paused to read them.
In the 1980’s 1990’s if you cannot run with a 60 pounds at a steady pace 4 miles in a short time
You would be deemed unfit for becoming a ranger or a seal ,
I heard that the run is two miles now with the weight of a new military body armor for combat.
That’s 60 pounds of armor
Without your weapon ammunition and anything else for a mission.
They depend on vehicles -
What if your envoy gets killed what if you had to run to live?
What if you get left behind on accident or there are too many causalities and you gotta run
Like the rangers in Mogadishu
The training today
seems like it might put soldiers at risk, they ought to be technically tactically proficient and exceptionally athletic.
Fearless
Loyal
Mannered
Sworn in by oath to uphold and
Defend the constitution
The requirements cannot get any lower or we will have a poor military.
Well said! I have shared this with my fellow high school coaches.
Thanks so much!
Excelente 👌💯

Loved the article - just sent it to my grandson who I know will take it to heart. 🙏
