This may be my favorite tribute to Dolly and I've read many in the last few days. I imagine that she would be happy to know that you "got her" and took the time to teach us her technique in an in-depth way. Really makes me think - or re-think things.
Thanks so much. I went down a Dolly rabbit hole after she passed. Really full of so much insight and more importantly lived her life to reflect those values.
Excellent. But as with any of these ideas, they’ve always been uttered before. “It is easier to act yourself into a new way of feeling than to feel yourself into a new way of acting”. Harry Stack Sullivan is credited with saying this but it may go back to Buddhism. Nike condensed it into its own non-original version- “Just Do It”!
But as ever Dolly gives it a down home practical makeover.
My comment had really got to do with waiting for the feeling, to have some visitation of Devine motivation, before getting going. It applies to so many things. We’ve all had the “I’m tired, I don’t feel like this” transforming to “I can’t believe I’m enjoying this”. Most of the time this is the result to committing to the doing.
seconding all the comments here, Steve. this essay is sharp and gets to the core of fully experiencing Being human.
the journey to "knowing" who you are is a lifelong journey that only YOU can take.
i sure wish i'd listened to that Wisdom at the core earlier. each on their own Heroine journey, bespoke, unique for them. and, we change every day as we absorb MORE Wisdom. so that knowing is a "verb" not a destination. a practice.
on Purpose. love your clear rational operationalization of "on Purpose." what does the practice of BEING you show up in the World as each day "in action"? that too is a practice that you can rationally discern -- did i do "me" on Purpose today? and how will it show up tomorrow? this keeps directionality intentional.
Gonna be rereading this one. :)
me too!
You are right about her being genuine. A sad thing lacking nowadays.
Also, she wrote two all-time classics in one day (Jolene, and I will always love you.' I mean, how mad is that?
This is fantastic! I will be sharing this in my classroom. Thanks Steve!

As outlined in the article. Aristotle beat them all to it.

Thanks for this Steve. You couldn't have picked a better quote to build from.
Yes. It really struck me when I came across it.

thanks for the work you're doing.
Thanks so much, Karl. Love your insights. It really is all about the journey to 'knowing.'
and that journey is infinite, and on behalf of a Totality -- our Uni-verse: the whole story.
So much to unpack here and much appreciated. Thank you, Steve.
Thanks! So glad it resonated.
